About Me

Me

Me

Hello Pigeon Racing World,

I just wanted to introduce myself; my name is Chris I created PigeonRacingPigeons.com to share my pigeon racing passion with the world, and to share my passion with the rest of the pigeon community.

MyStory,
I personally got interested in pigeons a few years back, my uncle had a pigeon loft and as a kid he used to keep pigeons on the rooftop in brooklyn NY, after moving upstate he built a loft in his backyard and this is where I was first introduced to the world of pigeons. To be completly honest with you I really didn’t understand anything about it and I didn’t even see what he liked about it. Anyway a few months later he purchased a bird from Oklahoma and put it into his loft, about three days later he opened the door to the loft to feed his pigeons and the bird he just bought from oklahoma escaped. About one week later the breeder that he bought the bird off of called my uncle up and said “didn’t I sell you a bird” and he recited the band number my uncle responded “yea but he escaped from my loft last week” and the breeder said “well…he’s back!”

After escaping from my uncles loft in NY, the pigeon flew all the way back to oklahoma! I was completely floored and my passion for pigeons was born. Not only could I not beleive that the pigeon flew that far but it actually found his way all the way home. I was hooked from that moment on.

They really are amazing creatures I know first hand and that is why PigeonRacingPigeons.com was created. Please feel free to check out the site and comment we would really love to hear from you.

My Goal,

The goal of PigeonRacingPigeons.com is to help preserve and promote the pigeon racing sport and hobby as well as bringing awarness to the general public. I also hope that this site will help to educate pigeon fanciers. I haven’t been involved in pigeon racing for that long so I still have alot to learn but one of my favorite things to do is talk with champion and successfull fanciers which I have had the pleasure of doing and sharing what I learn from them along the way with the rest of you.

Again, my name is Chris and I look forward to meeting and hearing from you fellow pigeon fanciers, please feel free to contribute to this blog by commenting and posting I would really love to hear from you.

Thanks for visiting,

-Chris (Contact Me)

    hi chris
I live in north wales where a lot of cats roam but to me dont pose a problem, on occasion i have one or two hawks fly over head and i know they enjoy a good munch on a lovely pigeon.
i am very new to the pigeon scene and i have near enough no experience. With a hecktic scheduel i dont know wheither i should keep pigeons in my garden (show or racing pigeons). i have had a great passion for animals my whole life and i find the pigeons are truely remarkable and they deserve more reconition than they are getting in the modern day. with your help i would like to make the choice to make a loft and buy some show pigeons and in the future some racing pigeons.

    thank you.
    kind regards frazer thorne.

    Hey Chris

Very nice site and it’s very functional. I’m originally from the Bronx N.Y. and I also moved to the Mid Hudson region, to Middletown N.Y. but currently living in Orlando F.L. I kept birds in the Bronx but not a real proper loft. And i’ve been out of the hobby for way too long and now i’m looking to get back in to it. This is a very helpful site and I’m looking to connect with a local club here in the Central F.L area if you have any information about clubs in my area please let me know. Best of luck and keep up the good work.

    Hi Chris…

Sorry it’s taking me so long to comment on your site. I have been reading your newsletter for about a month now, and just wanted to tell you what a fantastic job you have done. I also am from Brooklyn, NY, now living in No Carolina. Like your uncle, I moved after I got married to the Binghamton NY,upstate area. I raced pigeons in the late 60’s in Brooklyn before I went onto the army and loved every minute of it. Back then, racing was real strong as It seemed every block in my old neighborhood had a racing loft. Now, after so many years I have a strong desire to build a small loft and get back into it down in NC.
I wish you the best with this great website, keep up the good work. Your articles have defintly jogged my old memory of thing’s I havent thought of in years. Best regards.. I will keep in touch.. Tony

  17. #20 by Gregory Brooks on December 14, 2010 - 10:14 am

Well it is December 14th in Central Florida and the temp is hovering at freezing and threatened to dip well below. I don’t know about you, but MY globe isn’t warming!
Good time for discussions on the effects of weather on pigeons. Good to time to talk about the loft.

I’m still interested in hearing from our seasoned experts about line breeding and recommendations on pairing- What’s too close if anything? What characteristics do breeders like to combine, or cross?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

    Hi Chris,
It seems to be very difficult to reach you about our dispute about the T shirt that I ordered which you have not yet supplied but paid for 6th June this year .It would seem that even with all of your promises to refund, which you can do with paypal using my email address, that you are finding it difficult to set the records straight.
I am sure this episode is out of character for you but I still insist that I receive satisfaction with this transaction.

Mike, if you ever read this, your brotherhood of pigeon fanciers gets a big kick out of the fact you have the same… predisposition to LOVE our flying friends- their whistling wings, their cooing and kissing, their strut and their drive.

    • #32 by Noel Lavery on November 18, 2010 - 3:17 pm

Chris, I would appreciate your views on the fo;;owing feeding regime for racing pigeons sprint or distamce: Tic beans, wheat, barley and green peas. This mixture is also fed to my youngbirds when they start racing.

    • #33 by Gregory Brooks on November 20, 2010 - 1:48 pm

Friend- Your pigeons have Canker- It is a Protozoal infection preventable and curable if caught early enough. When it kills your bird it has progressed well beyond the inside of the upper mandible. It may be seen to close off the esophagous embedding itself in the throat and lungs. A remedy we used to have was Spartrix. Follow this for more information:
      http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/f6/my-pigeons-has-canker-urgent-12105.html

And here is a good site for investigating pigeon health issues:
      http://pigeons.taylorschoice.co.uk/pages/Pigeon_Health_Problems_and_So

    • #34 by Gregory Brooks on November 20, 2010 - 2:15 pm

Khalid- Your birds have Canker, a yellow, cheesy Protozoal that spreads through feeding of young. Separate out all infected birds. If it is killing them it has progressed well beyond the mandible and is likely choking the esophagous and spread to the lungs. It can also spread through the digestive track and starve the birds. We used to treat with a product called Spartrix. There is also a product called Emtryl.

    Chris,
It was nice to read about you. I am currently the race secretary for the KY club here in Kentucky. We are based in Richmond, Kentucky. We were excited to get back the old Charles Heitzman bands for out club, “KY.”
This year we set a record from 100 miles, having two light red check sions home the distance in 75 minutes. It was a gorgeous toss from the top of Rarity Mountain in Tenn. and we had a perfect 25 MPH tailwind.
Also, we had 33 birds released from below Orlando, Florida, 700 air miles, on August 8 of this year. To make the story short, we got a silver ylg. Sion hen in one day and a half–this setting a new record for such distance in KY. And six weeks later, we got a BB YB Sion hen in. Incredibly, this was a YB—a bird less than one year of age coming back from 700 miles; I believe, possibly an unofficial record of such. I’m calling her “BABY SIX WEEKS.”
THE KY is flying in 3 races this year outside our own club: THE LKY ONE LOFT RACE, THE MIDWEST1 LOFT RACE in MINN and THE AU RACE IN OKL. Our one entry is with Randy Goodpasture of The World Of Wings Loft.
Our goal is to have solid 500 mile YB races and 1,000 mile yearling and OB races and we hope to improve on them with each year.

i think pigeon racing is still going very well in great britain. every week i read in the british homing world about all the new young starters coming into the pigeon sport.i think it is expensive to get started now and this is the reason why we are not geting as many new members coming into the pigeon sport. yours in sport les gilbert

They hooked about three times and went striaght uptown to the Bronx bye the time we got home they we’re there, but still i didnt get into homers but i did get a grizzle pair of homers. Now that i have a place in the back of my house i just got into it this year hopefully i can have some type of a good year to talk about in the coming years and thank you from have=ing this site where we can all have a say about our pigeons Good luck to all in the 2010 Race from TATSCRU LOFT eamails if any question @ Prisonbrake2008@yahoo.com

Hey Chris, Fantastic job with web site. My father has had racing pigeons my whole life. Myself I have a small kit of rollers, just for fun because of my Bird Of Prey problem. (Coopers in Fresno,Ca are bad man) Anyway, my Father Mark Rozwadowski host the California Late Hatch Classic Race. I’ve always been a fan of racing pigeons but zoning rules in track homes has put a huge dent in pigeon racing fanciers from evolving here in California I believe. Just my take on things. http://www.californialatehatchclassic.com check it out… Pleasure meeting you…Andy Rozwadowski

Yeah man- the Cooper and Sharp Shins are what plagued my lofts in Redding and Danbury, Connecticut. Learned their migrating schedule to reduce losses. Heartbreaking.

Hi Don- would you write something regarding eye colds and also on the topic of drafts? Re: drafts, I would like to read more about the difference between good ventilation and harmful drafts.
Thanks- Best Regards- Gregory Brooks Homewood Loft

chris, what about breeders ,how old is to old ?. can you bring a hen back from not producing?

    • #89 by glen on May 4, 2010 - 9:12 am

Ive Given an old infertile hen or infertile cock not laying fertile eggs HoneyBee Propolis ive done it and it works some how and learned this yrs. ago from an old flyer. Either dampen feed and sprinkle on feed of manually put down throat. you {cannot} overdose a bird with propolis and it works on birds older than 10 + –GC

Dear Sir What solution do you have for hens that are egg bound. Be waiting Thanks JB

    • #92 by Gregory Brooks Homewood Loft on June 19, 2010 - 12:36 am

Hi John, I was wondering how you made out with the egg-bound hen? I recall one especially strong blue check hen I had that happen to. Hate to be gross but I dealt with it with vaseline on a pinky tip and it worked out okay- Hens can die pretty quickly from egg-binding. Hope you faired okay.
      Best wishes,

    Hello Chris,
Daily read information on the blog, then reread them to deepen the news.
Soon I hope to have pigeons champions.
I want to say that I use in place of olive oil, fish oil for
    mixture of food.
    Is better, in my opinion!
