Pigeons Used to Smuggle Drugs

Here is a pretty interesting news story, even though the pigeons were being used in a bad way it still shows how magnificent these birds are.

Brazilian prison authorities have discovered a new smuggling scheme used in jails. Carrier pigeons are being used to deliver drugs and mobile phones to inmates. Here’s more on this story.

Brazilian prison authorities have recently discovered inmates smuggling in drugs and mobile phones through an unusual channel. The inmates of Sao Paulo state penitentiary were using carrier pigeons to get the goods inside the jail. The prison is located in Marilia, some four hundred fifty kilometers away from the city of Sao Paulo. Inmates were kept under close surveillance when it was discovered they were somehow getting contraband. The jail’s security guards only began to suspect the pigeons had a connection to the increasing amount of drugs and phones inside the cells after they observed some birds were having difficulty in flying. This was confirmed once prison officers found out that some of the birds had small backpacks attached to them. Wanderlei Gatti, a pigeon breeder, believes the prisoners have been taming the birds themselves.

[Wanderlei Gatti, Pigeon Breeder]:
“Someone is breeding these pigeons inside the cells and they are being tamed inside the prison.”

The penitentiary also intensified the search to relatives before weekly visits after a woman was caught leaving the prison with two carrier pigeons inside a box. Investigations later revealed that one of the inmates had managed to tame the birds and make a nest in his cell. The pigeons would then be passed on to people outside the prison through the visitors. Police chief Paulo de Souza said it was surprising that such old-fashioned methods were still being used.

[Paulo de Souza, Police Chief]:
” In the digital era we still find this situation involving post pigeons.”
Carrier pigeons were first used by the Egyptians and the Persians over three thousand years ago.

    Hi Chris,
It’s pretty amazing when pigeons and their capabilities are showed on television or news just like The Taking on Tyson show. Although in this video pigeons were used in a negative way,but it showed what an incredible bird/animal pigeons are.

It never ceases to amaze me how we humans can find ways to use animals to our benifit. Unfortunately in this case not for the good of the sport.

Well let me say first that the inmate that started this knew quite a lot about pigeons before he started this. This is just another example of what good pigeons are capable of doing. Though the birds being used were not good racing pigeons they could find there way back from shorter distences like say 5 miles and that was far enough away for the items to be placed into the small backpacks and released to go back to thier home. This just shows what birds even wild birds are capable of doing.

Unbelievable! I once read a story about a river rafting co. that sent film back to base via pigeons. I’ve even heard that “we” still may be called upon when all other ways of communication are gone, but this??????

how cruel.its not genius or amazing its evil how would they like to have something there own body weight stitched to them and then made to go for a run?it is the prisons fault for not doing there job properly they should also have animal cruelty added to there sentence

Hello Chis, I would admit this is a very clever idea but not knew. Pigeons have been used for years to carry and deliver goods. They were used in the army, stock market, and the post office. As far as prisoners to be rewarded Raja, I dont think so!!!. First the guards weren’t doing there jobs, or the pigeons would of been confiscated. They obviously dont do cell checks at this lovely place. And besides, it was proably some old timer who flew birds on Brooklyn roof tops who sugested or came up with the idea.
    Thanks for reading, Nick
